The Balance between Celebration and Cell

mario

by Mario Vega

Prior to our transition to become a cell church, it was clear that we were only emphasizing the celebration wing. We focused almost exclusively on the celebrations during Elim’s first nine years.

When we started the cell church transition, it was necessary to balance the celebration in the building with the cells in the houses. To do so, some activities carried out during the week had to be suspended. Some members, accustomed to our celebration focus, struggled to understand why some activities in the church building were being suspended and replaced by meetings in the homes.

Some even thought of the new emphasis as a “human church growth technique.” In reality, we started to practice the New Testament model for the church!

When cell ministry gained momentum, the church began to understand the meaning behind the two types of meetings. People began to capture the cell vision and understand that they were practicing the New Testament lifestyle. Today, both types of meetings are very natural to the church. From being a church that valued only celebration, today, we treasure both house meetings and celebration gatherings.

Actually, you might be surprised to know that we only keep statistics for what takes place in cell gatherings and don’t keep track of how many attend the celebration services. For Elim members, the cells are the church. The celebration is to celebrate together and enjoy the oneness of the body of Christ.

The Cell Calendar: How to Maximize Effectiveness

ralph

by Ralph Neighbour

In the flow of a cell calendar, four stages are followed: Consolidation, Foundation, Penetration, Cultivation. These guide the cell groups in their equipping track. The launch pad for the Cultivation stage is a churchwide Harvest Event that draws in those from the oikoses of “Type A” unbelievers.

Following this strategy in the 1990’s in Singapore, we were able to cycle these stages approximately three times a year and grew from 600 to 7,000 in five years. The Regeneration Church in Dnepropretskov, Ukraine has adopted this calendar and are now concluding their first full cycle.

The growth requires multiplication of cells to absorb the new believers and in the case of the Regeneration church it has also required adding an additional Celebration service.

Following the city wide Harvest Event, the Consolidation stage launches as converts are first brought to a Spiritual Formation Weekend where their conversion experience is affirmed and they are oriented into a Triad within a cell group. There, this “Little Child” is cared for by the “Young Man” who has mastered the evil one and cared for by the “Father” of the triad. This launches the Consolidation period. The Daily Growth Guides are discussed in the Triad section of each cell meeting.

Next comes the Foundation stage as strongholds, soul ties, and generational curses are dealt with both in the daily materials and the Spiritual Victory Retreat. This is attended by the “Little Child” and the “Young Man” who has been the mentor.

In the third stage, Penetration, the focus is in developing the “Little Child” and the “Young Man” to become Harvest Partners. They attend the third Retreat and learn how to share the John 3:16 Diagram. They also prayerfully select responsive, seeking persons they already know. These are defined as “Type A” or the “man of peace” Jesus described in Luke 10. Backed by the cell, many of these are brought to faith.

In the fourth stage, Cultivation, the cells focus on the households of the new converts. For approximately 6 weeks, the cell engages in “eating and drinking” with the family members as the witness of the baby Christian travels vertically through the group. Many cell meetings during this time include the “ungifted and unbelievers” (1 Corinthians 14:24-26).

Just before the citywide Harvest Event, all the cells have a special event: a party, a dinner, a day spent in a park, etc. where protracted fellowship with family members prepare them to be guests at the large meetings.

During this stage, we kept the “Lamb’s Book of Life” in the church office. As teams harvested unbelievers, they would phone in the details each day to be recorded in the notebook. A board on the wall with movable numbers showed the growing harvest. In Singapore, we averaged more than 5 new believers per day added to the total figure.

This intentional calendar keeps the cell church focused on its primary mission: the equipping of believers and the penetration of their communities with the revelation of the Presence and Power of the Indwelling Christ!

The Power of Cell Church Planting

jim

by Jim Wall

Our church is located in a large metropolitan area. A few years ago, we discovered our church family included several families who lived in small towns thirty to forty-five minutes away. They attended our weekend celebrations. They did not join our cells because they considered it too far to drive during the week. My wife and I decided we would drive to them and start a cell group in their area. It filled up quickly. As soon as we trained an intern to lead it, we started another cell…and another… and another.

After a couple of years of growth, we cast a vision for a daughter church and they caught it. The Lord called a young couple in our church to take on the challenge of planting the new church. By July 2010 we had seven cells in that area. It was time for New Branch Community Church to be born. Initially, the members continued to worship and serve in our celebrations. Their tithes and offerings were held separately. On September 19, 2010 they held their first public celebration; 120 people—committed to forming a new church—gathered. Within one year they had leaders in place, full-time leased facilities at a great location and they were financially self-sufficient!

In a day where researchers say that 80% of church plants don’t make it, how did this one grow to self-sufficiency within a year? The answer is the cells were in place before the celebration began. It was the cells that created a strong bond among the original core group. It was the cell leaders who formed the backbone of the new leadership team. The celebration merely announced their presence in the community. Since then the church has continued to grow. More than 200 people gathered for their first anniversary service. Dozens of people have come to Christ. The baby church is making a difference.

This past fall, my wife and I started a cell group in an area thirty minutes in the other direction from our campus. That cell has already birthed two more cells. We are praying now for a church planter and scouting possible sites for a celebration. I wonder how many churches we can launch using this model? There is certainly no shortage of hurting people who desperately need Jesus!

Momentum and Flexibility

jeff

By Jeff Tunnell

Pastor Rob Hastings & I were discussing this topic yesterday: “Where should our emphasis be at this time in our cell church development?”

When we had 30 cells, those groups became the front door of the church. We had more people entering the body via the cells than the celebrations. There were more people attending cells during the week than in our two services on Sunday.

Now, after a series of strains on the church (transitioning to a new Lead Pastor, half the church leaving to go to the church plant of our former associate pastor, economic downturn in a resort community, and leaders moving away) we have 11 cells and the celebration has become our front door for entry into the body. We have numerous visitors and regular attendees who have not yet been assimilated into a cell group. This requires us to focus on in-house evangelism, that is, moving weekenders into cell groups.

Remaining flexible and evaluating our present condition is important. Until momentum is achieved in the cells and evangelism through the cells is taking place again, it will be necessary for us to embrace those He is sending to us in the celebration. I look forward to discipling those we are receiving, and raising up new leaders who will help us regain momentum. Eventually, we are hoping the  cells re-emerge as the front door! This will indicate that we are reaching a larger segment of our city than our building can accommodate.

Do you think this flexibility is important?

Emphasizing Different Wings on the Cell Journey

joel

by Joel Comiskey

The cell church teaches and practices both cell and celebration. However, cell or celebration might be emphasized more or less in the church’s life cycle. Let me explain.

Most church plants will begin by focusing almost entirely on the cell. As the cells grow and multiply, those cells will come together more frequently to celebrate. Church planters need to firstly focus on cell members, cell outreach, and leadership training. The celebration services will naturally develop in its frequency and detail as more people are added to cells and can help in the celebration gatherings.

A church transitioning to the cell strategy, on the other hand, will already have a weekly celebration and other church ministries. At the time of transition, the natural emphasis will be on the celebration wing and those ministries associated with it. The lead pastor starts slowly by leading one pilot cell group and then over-time multiplying the pilot group. As the new cells grow and multiply, the cell wing will be given more visibility and emphasis.

One of the great things about cell church ministry is its rich emphasis on both cell and celebration. This doesn’t mean, however, that both cell and celebration will be equally emphasized at all times in the church’s life cycle.

Me explico.
