Key Principles for Planting Simple Cell Churches

joelby Joel Comiskey

While more people can lead smaller cell church plants, there are still key principles to follow when planting a cell church. Here are a few of them:

Calling of God:. The calling to be the lead pastor of a church plant is beyond leading a single cell. A cell leader answers to the supervisor or pastor of the church. The church planter has ultimate responsibility before God for a particular local church. I believe God’s calling to plant a cell church includes both husband and wife. I’ve seen several church plants fail because the wife was not 100% committed to make it work. On the other hand, I find great joy watching church planting couples work side by side in whole-hearted devotion.

Fervent prayer: Spirituality really does matter. Techniques and strategies won’t sustain a church plant over the long haul. Fervent prayer and dependency does. I’m not only referring to the devotional lives of husband and wife but also to the emphasis on corporate prayer in the church.

Contact: Study and prayer are essential but effective church planters get out of the closet / office and on to the street. As a coach of church planters, I like to hold them accountable for the number of outside contacts made each week, whether in the neighborhood, Starbucks, or the local auto repair shop. Bivocational church planters are especially blessed to have a network of non-Christians with whom they can build relationships.

Persistence and patience: These two words go together. Most church planters want to see more growth than they are currently experiencing. Yet, I’ve seen church planters fail by demanding too much of their people too quickly. One church planter quit in frustration becuase his people didn’t respond quickly enough to leading new cell groups. He gave them an ultimatim, and when they didn’t respond to his promptings, he left the church plant. Don’t do this. Church planters should patiently persist until God gives the growth. I’m not referring to sitting around and waiting for God to move. Rather, a church planter should do everything possible under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to reach out while ultimately trusting God to stir hearts and give growth.

The Key Advantage of Planting a Cell Church

mario

by Mario Vega

The main advantage of planting a church starting with one cell is that all people that come to know Jesus from the beginning will grow in a totally cellular environment. That means that the new Christians will be trained for leadership and will have a passion for cell multiplication.

A transition is not necessary since people are already being born in a completely cellular environment. For example, it requires much less time and effort to learn Mandarin in China than to learn it when you are an adult and living in the West. In the same way, planting small cell churches saves time and effort on a task that otherwise, will require time, resources, power of persuasion and a good budget.

Benefits of Smaller, More Nimble Cell Churches

Les

by Les Brickman

There are a number of benefits of smaller cell churches. Here are a few:

Invisibility:
An elephant in the room is hard to miss. A mosquito, on the other hand, is nearly impossible to see. Leven is invisible, yet one can readily see the transformation of the bread. Cell church plants can be difficult to see and even harder to persecute or stop. Their effect on a neighborhood, city or region can be transformational. In the Moslem coastal regions of Kenya, cell churches must be nimble and invisible.

Flexibility:
In the natural, the larger and older an organism, the less flexible becomes its structural organization. The young are much more flexible than the old. So in the spiritual. Cell plants can be much more flexible than larger, older cell churches. They can adapt to meet constantly developing needs. They can bend in the wind of change or persecution without breaking. Every member ministering out of their spiritual giftedness, creating fluid structures manifesting the dynamic life of Jesus, are goals more easily reached by cell plants than older, larger, more rigid cell churches. While still small and nimble, they can be extremely flexible regarding the where and how and frequency of coming together for corporate celebration.

Creativity:
Have you noticed the young are generally more creative than the old? The young attempt and create things the older and wiser have decided can never be. Call it ingenuity, creativity, imagination, or whatever you will. But new life is dynamic and seeks creative expression. Cell plants must grow creatively to survive and thrive. Necessity has been called the mother of invention.

There are those in your cell church who don’t mind being invisible. They embrace change readily and adapt easily. They long to express their creativity for kingdom expansion. They often chafe against what is, because they see what can be. The fruit of a cell church is not a cell, it is another cell church. Perhaps it is time for you to bear fruit and plant another cell church?

Advantages of Smaller Cell-Churches?

billby Bill Joukhadar

Indeed, compared with Mega cell-churches, smaller cell-churches (comprised of one or a few cells, meeting together occasionally for a larger body celebration), bubble-over with advantages that come from their smallness. From my experience, here are a few advantages that spring to mind:

  1. Smaller cell-churches can initiate changes at a much faster rate than Mega size churches –
less “red tape” means that decisions can be made quicker!
  2. Members who think “if I don’t step in to help, there’s no one else to do it” are more readily drawn into participation, motivating greater commitment … instilling a sense of ownership
  3. They are more economically viable – “church” is facilitated in their homes. They don’t need to purchase or rent large facilities
  4. A greater percentage of the tithing and offerings can be devoted to supporting the needs of members and invested in outreach opportunities
  5. Unable to afford paid/professional staff greatly motivates shared leadership
  6. Children are less likely to be overlooked from the life and function of the church
  7. They are less likely to be encumbered by “denominational” shackles
  8. They are more flexible in the way they “do” life

What do you think? Have you experienced other advantages? Please drop me a line, I’m keen to learn from your experiences.

She is Only 17!

Pastor Jeff

by Jeff Tunnell Korean Version Spanish Version (Versión en español)

A respected pastor friend from the United States was ministering in mainland China among the underground church.  A secret meeting of the area pastors had been arranged and his team was available to pray over each pastor for encouragement and prophetic ministry as the Holy Spirit might speak to these dedicated leaders.  There were more than 500 hundred respondents and so my friend asked if his team could pray only for those pastors bearing a larger responsibility in order to expedite the time.

Working every prayer through an interpreter the night grew long and my friend was tiring from the ministry load. Just then a young girl presented herself for prayer. Appearing to be under 20 years of age the organizer was summoned to verify why she was taking valuable time away from the pastors who needed ministry.  After a few short questions the answer came, “I will ask you to pray a simple blessing upon this girl who is only 17 years old.  She is not a large church pastor and I apologize that she is in the line for prayer because she is overseeing only 500 people in villages and they are simple cell churches made up of those she has led to the Lord herself.”

My friend determined then and there to repent of his attitude, pray for all that presented themselves as God’s agents and never again qualify leaders by his own standards.  The simple cell church was penetrating this closed country with surprising agility and effectiveness .  Its leaders were quickly mobilized to meet the needs of the expanding kingdom of God.  This agility is one of the strong characteristics of simple church planting.
