The Cell Church and Money

BILL

by Bill Joukhadar

One area in which cell-based churches perform stronger than ministry-based churches is financial giving. Healthy cells inspire their members to have ownership in every area of the life of their group, including financial challenges.

Several years ago, a member of one of our cells in our church in Cairo died suddenly from a heart attack. The group was made up of African refugees. Without any assistance from anyone outside the group, they contacted the deceased relatives in Africa and received instructions regarding the body of their friend.

The members then pooled in their money and arranged for the body of their friend to be transported by air back to his home country. The group then invited local friends of the deceased to gather together for a memorial service, followed by modest refreshments.

This amazing challenge took place without the knowledge and assistance of the executive pastors of the church. They did this because of their love for their deceased friend and because they “owned” the challenge.

What Has Your Experience Been?

Pastor Jeff

by Jeff Tunnell

Speaking to the issue of finances of the cell church, at the end of his blog yesterday Joel’s question was “What has your experience been?”.  Allow me to  answer that question.  I invite you to share your answers also via the “comment” option below.

I phoned our administrator to verify the following: each of our cell leaders are extremely generous and faithful in giving to the work of God’s kingdom.  All of them practice the tithe principle and believe in the vision for penetrating the community with the gospel.  This leads me to conclude again, that the cell church method is a leader building strategy that wins the heart loyalty and finances of those leaders.  Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”  It is not our experience YET that those attending a cell are more committed to giving than those only attending the celebrations on Sunday.

Joel points out that he has no statistical records to support his theory and I would offer a similar observation; we are a smaller cell church and are acquainted with nearly everyone personally and can testify that previous paragraph is generally true.

What’s your story?

Permtanme responder a esa pregunta.

Increased Giving in Cell Churches

joelI have found that when a church becomes a cell church (whether “transitioning” to the cell church or planting a cell church), the financial giving increases. I don’t have any hard statistical proof (although this would be a great research project), but here is why I believe my “theory” holds true:

When a church gets involved in cell minstry and the people start attending cells, they learn to share transparently, grow as disciples, and eventually learn that giving their tithes and offerings is an important part of the Christian life. Those who primarily come to hear a message on Sunday don’t have the same commitment. They are often “sermon tasters” rather than maturing disciples and this is reflected in their lack of giving.

While it’s true that giving is at an all time low (about 6-14% of Christians tithe to their churches, according to Barna), this percentage can change when members realize that they are the ministers, the priests of the living God (Revelation 1:6). Again, cell ministry adds health to the congregation, which is reflected in giving patterns. When members primarily sit and listen, giving is often interpreted as paying for a performance. When those same people realize they are the pastors and ministers, it’s more common to give out of obedience.

Finances and the Appointment of New Ministers

mario

by Mario Vega

At Elim, we normally do not keep statistics of the amount of money a leader or a supervisor gathers. Consequently, the financial recovery is not a factor taken into account when promoting a person to the position of pastor. There would be no way to prove that a person has been financially effective or not.

But, indirectly, it is true that the finances are implicit in each promotion. The offerings are proportional to the amount of cells in a particular network. The greater the number of cells, it is logical to think there will be a greater collection of offerings. Since the multiplication is one of the most important factors when selecting a new pastor, the multiplication of offerings is definetly implied, even though we do not keep track of it.

As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, cell development serves as the basis for incorporating new pastors to the pastoral team. We believe that cell development will naturally produce the new salary needed to sustain the new pastor. God will provide the finances due to the fact that more people are participating in the Christian life of the congregation and offering will be one way of participating.

Meeting a Family’s Financial Needs

jimWallby Jim Wall

Scripture is clear, God intended the Body of Christ to work together to meet physical needs. One of the primary descriptions of the first century church at Jerusalem is, “All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need” (Acts 2:44-45 NIV). Paul instructed the Church at Galatia, “Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” (Galatians 6:10 NLT). The only question is how do you do that in the most effective way?

Western Branch Community Church has found that two primary guidelines serve us well in keeping the process Biblical and the affected relationships healthy.

1. Our cell leadership evaluates the need. Sometimes when a family needs financial help, it’s because a genuine emergency has arisen. Other times, it’s because the family needs to learn how to manage their finances. Either way, we want to help. It is our cell leaders who are close enough to the family to know whether we should be “giving them a fish or teaching them how to fish.”

2. Checks should be written from a central fund. We have found that when a family is helped financially by their cell group there can sometimes be a sense of bondage that forms. Other times we’ve seen a co-dependence form. To avoid those problems we started the Hope Unleashed Fund. Cell members are encouraged to give free-will offerings to this fund. Cell leaders apply to the fund on behalf of the family in need. This partnership between the cell group and the central church creates a way for cell leaders to be personally involved in assessing the need and following up with the family after the need is met; while avoiding the problems we’ve seen when the money comes directly from the group.

I’d love to know more about your church manages money designated for the benevolent needs of your members and your community.
