Discipleship is a process of building the character of Christ in others. This character building is not something theoretical but practical and experiential (modeled after Jesus with his disciples).

So many forget one important detail when trying to disciple others: Jesus spent time with his twelve. The twelve learned experiential teaching from their Master because Scripture says that Jesus called his disciples to “be with him.”

The structure of a cell church is a blessing because it helps us to carry forward the process of “character building” through community relationships in a small, manageable environment–just like Jesus and his twelve.

Cell meetings provide a friendly, family-like environment in which members can grow and learn. Wise leaders help each member move forward in the process of becoming like Jesus. The cell works hand-in-glove with other parts of the cell structure, such as training, coaching, and the celebration service.

Without a well-designed structure, the cell by itself would lose the “synergy” of disciple making. The cell structure allows disciples to continue the character building process within and outside the cell. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit uses both the cell and cell system to mold and shape followers of Jesus.

Haciendo Discipulos a través del Sistema Celular.

Entendemos el discipulado como un proceso a través del cual se procura formar el carácter de Cristo en otros, entendiendo también que no es un proceso de formación teórico sino práctico y vivencial tal como lo hizo Jesús.

Pero debemos notar un detalle importante, Jesús se enfocó en la formación de 12 hombres con quienes pasó mucho tiempo y ellos recibieron enseñanzas de primera mano de una manera vivencial, “estando con Él”.

La estructura de una iglesia celular es de gran bendición ya que nos ayuda a llevar adelante este proceso de “formación de carácter”. Esta estructura nos permite que con naturalidad vayamos levantando otras vidas enfocadas en Jesús y apuntando a un grupo pequeño, manejable, tal como Cristo lo hizo.

Las reuniones caseras nos van permitiendo establecer relaciones naturales de amistad y en este sentido mantenemos el enfoque de formar discpulos. El lder aprovecha esta estructura general para que desde su propia célula se vaya generando este proceso.

Las células se convierten en el lugar  para levantar discpulos, nuevos lderes que generen el mismo proceso de desarrollo de vidas.

Sin una estructura bien diseñada como lo es el sistema celular perderamos esa “sinergia” en donde se impulsa naturalmente el desarrollo de nuevos discpulos. Los nuevos miembros miran el proceso y se sienten impulsados a seguirlo.

La estructura celular nos da un impulso para la formación de nuevas vidas y, por supuesto, con el respaldo del Espritu Santo se levantan verdaderos siervos y siervas que aman a Dios y anhelan servirle.

What was it like to be Christ’s disciple? We do know that Jesus called a group of individuals together with the purpose of molding them into a community of twelve. The way he did this was to call them to be with him and each other. Jesus molded them into a unit through practical experiences, real life situations, and by teaching kingdom values.

In the 21st century church, the small group is still the best atmosphere to develop disciples because it helps “individuals” to break free from their individualism to focus on the welfare of others. The true Christian life is focused on “relationships” and the true meaning of discipleship is: relationships with a purpose. That is, God’s purpose for the cell is to unify a group of people to be on a mission together, to make disciples who continue to multiply those disciples.

In the environment of the large celebration service, it’s difficult to establish relationships that grow and mature. On Sunday, people come together for one or two hours and then return the next Sunday. The small group, on the other hand, focuses on accountability and relationships. Yet, it’s important for those relationships to maintain an outward focus.

I’ve been involved in cell church ministry for almost twenty years (both as an associate pastor and now as senior pastor). I’ve noticed a few things that build disciples in small groups:

• Sharing the teaching time within the cell. Involvement helps people to take ownership for the cell.
• Helping members keep an outreach focus. Some ideas include getting involved in acts of mercy such as visiting a hospital, a prison or some needy person.
• Prayer walking around the neighborhood as a group.
• Asking each cell member to follow a devotional guide during the week, and then asking each one to share at the cell meeting what they’ve learned.

When the cell group is actively evangelizing, the group bonds together and develops close relationships.

I’ve noticed that as the cell maintains a great commission focus, each member will grow in community and selfless devotion to others.

Haciendo discpulos a través de las células

Uno de los puntos importantes por el que quisiera comenzar es por el tema de lo que es el discipulado desde la práctica de Jesús. Él llamó a un grupo de individuos y los invitó a que lo siguieran, a que estuvieran con Él.

Se puede ver en los relatos bblicos cómo Jesucristo los iba formando por medio de cosas prácticas, situaciones reales en la vida que se convertan en verdaderas enseñanzas las cuales iban formando el carácter de sus seguidores.

En la época que vivimos, la reunión de grupos pequeños es una gran herramienta y recurso a través del cual se puede ir desarrollando discpulos ya que nos ayuda a romper el individualismo y nos permite enfocarnos en el desarrollo y bienestar de otras vidas.

La verdadera vida cristiana esta enfocada en “relaciones” y el discipulado es eso: relaciones con propósito. La célula nos impulsa a mantenernos juntos con una misión la cual es hacer discpulos que se multipliquen constantemente en otros.

En el ambiente de una congregación numerosa es difcil establecer relaciones que nos permitan lograr el objetivo de crecer y madurar, generalmente en una gran celebración dominical la gente llega y toma un tiempo de una hora o dos y luego no la volvemos a ver hasta la siguiente semana. El grupo pequeño nos mantiene unidos de tal forma que podemos rendir cuentas los unos a los otros.

Recomendaciones prácticas para hacer discpulos por medio de las células:

Invite a los miembros de su célula para realizar alguna tarea de misericordia: visita a un hospital, cárcel o a un necesitado. Luego comparta las enseñanzas en la célula. La gente aprende más haciendo y compartiendo que en un salón de clase.

Invite a su célula (discpulos) a caminar por su vecindario e ir detectando necesidades, luego oren y permita que se expresen con ideas para poder cubrir dichas necesidades.

Mantenga a su discpulo o grupo de discpulos con una gua de devocionales para que estudien diariamente y compartan cada semana lo que han podido aprender y lo que han podido hacer.

Cuando la célula mantiene el enfoque evangelstico nos permite mantener el enfoque de alcance y en este sentido vamos desarrollando vidas que se afiancen en Dios y poco a poco se conviertan en formadores de otros.

Una de las grandes bendiciones que podemos ver en la tarea de discipulado por medio de las células es que vamos transmitiendo el amor desinteresado los unos por los otros y as crecemos y maduramos juntos para cumplir la Gran Comisión.

One of the things we’re doing in our church right now is to allow a group of cells to participate the Sunday worship. That is, each week a different group of cells cover specific areas of ministry like nursery, children’s ministry, parking, hosting, security, and so on. For us, it is very exiting to see families growing and working together to minister.

Our intention is to get families to serve God, and usually (not always) we are looking for married cell leaders. We believe that a couple who serves the Lord brings a powerful testimony of God’s power to heal and bring success in marriage.

Every week in our church, our cell leaders meet, share opinions and thoughts, and help out in the life of our church. We are seeing how God is using the family to minister and provide the needs of our church.

It’s my conviction that the family who serves the Lord together, also grows together, and testifies to a lost world that Jesus lives.

Testimonios para el Fortalecimiento de la Familia

Qué estamos haciendo en las células y celebración para hacer que la familia sea una prioridad?.

Uno de los sistemas de trabajo de nuestra iglesia es permitir que cada semana una de las células participe en el servicio general de la iglesia, es decir, cada semana una de las células cubre areas de ministerio tanto en sala cuna, ministerio infantil, parqueadero, anfitriones, seguridad, etc.

Es importante ver cómo las células y los núcleos familiares se organizan para poder servir al Señor.

Nuestra intención es lograr que familias sirvan a Dios y generalmente (no siempre) buscamos que los lderes de célula sean parejas. Creemos que una pareja que sirve al Señor trae un testimonio poderoso, es una evidencia de la manifestación del Señor en la restauración familiar.

Cada semana en nuestra iglesia tenemos nuestra reunion de lderes celulares en donde la pareja que está al servicio comparte opiniones, aporta ideas y logramos ver cómo Dios usa la pareja para fortalecer el trabajo general de la iglesia.

Creo que la familia que sirve al Señor impacta en todo sentido, es un testimonio del obrar de Dios desde el núcleo familiar hacia afuera, la comunidad en general.

Even though Paul and Silas were imprisoned for the gospel, their confinement blessed others. The jailer in charge of their custody, saw the miraculous earthquake and cried out, “What should I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:31). Paul’s answer leaves us with an important principle, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved along with your entire household.” Here are some things we can learn from this encounter:

First: There is a promise of salvation for the entire “home.” God is interested in more than individuals. He is concerned about families. And when we implement family cells, we are inviting God’s blessing and salvation to our entire family.

Second: God from the beginning has been interested in families. We can see this interest in the way God treated Abraham, Noah, etc. God is the One who longs to build up families today, and I believe He is the One stirring churches to build strong family cells.

Third: Although we need to leave room for homogeneous groups to start naturally, family cells allow us to reach entire segments of the population who are untouched by the gospel. And in the process, our families will mature and grow in love and unity.

Fourth: Families are the foundation of our society. If our families are strong and healthy, we are laying a strong foundation for our country and nation. Each cell must remember that the goal is to transform society through the gospel, and family cells are an important way to do this.

Celulas Familiares

Pablo y Silas fueron encarcelados por causa del evangelio, pero este encierro logró un resultado espiritual formidable. El carcelero encargado de su custodia, viendo el milagro sucedido, les pregunta: Señores, ¿qué tengo que hacer para ser salvo? Y la respuesta de los apóstoles nos deja un gran principio: “Cree en el Señor Jesucristo y serás salvo tu y tu casa.

PRIMERO: Hay una promesa de salvación para la “casa”, para la familia, para aquellos con los que compartimos da a da. Las reuniones familiares nos permitirán con mayor facilidad acercar el mensaje del evangelio a nuestra familia.

SEGUNDO: Dios desde el principio ha estado interesado en las familias, vemos a un Abraham, a un Noe, etc, por lo tanto, las reuniones caseras en familias nos permiten seguir manteniendo ese interés de Dios, de que toda la familia sea ministrada y lleguen a experimentar la salvación y el crecimiento en el Señor.

TERCERO: Pienso que existe la oportunidad para que los segmentos homogéneos sean ministrados, pero sin lugar a dudas que el hecho de compartir en familia la Palabra nos permitirá crecer juntos y alcanzar a aquellos de nuestro OIKOS que aún no han llegado al conocimiento de Jesús.

CUARTO: Las familias son la base de nuestras sociedades y si nuestras familias son ministradas de maneras sólidas, entonces, tenemos un futuro promisorio para nuestros pases. Cada célula en el sector que se encuentre ministrando no puede perder de vista que están para transformar positivamente la sociedad y la manera cómo afectemos con el evangelio las familias nos permitirá avanzar de mejor manera.

One of the great leaders of Israel, Joshua, launched a challenge to the people: “If you think it is wrong to serve the Lord, choose today whom you will serve. Choose the gods your fathers worshiped on the other side of the river, or choose the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15, NLV)

We see three key points in the decision of Joshua

1. Me: He took the leadership, initiative

2. My house: It involved a family

3. Serve: The home and serving the Lord only and sovereign.

Cell churches should assess the involvement of the heads of each household and make sure the their families are also involved.

When a cell group reaches out, it not only ministers to individuals but to entire families. In fact, only as entire families are reached for Jesus will the church achieve a solid, qualitative foundation.

Leaders are the key to making this happen. As leaders model family wholeness, they will exemplify this health to the rest of the church. Leader modeling is essential. Like Joshua, leaders must take the initiative and decide “as a family” to serve the Lord wholeheartedly.

[Yo, Joel Comiskey, quisiera presentar a Denis Fiallos. Denis fue uno de mis estudiantes en 1999 en el Ecuador y más tarde se convirtió en pastor de la Iglesia en la República en Quito en 2000. Uno de los grandes lderes del pueblo de Israel, Josué, llega un momento de la historia que toma una decisión y lanza un gran desafo al pueblo: “Y si mal os parece servir a Jehová, escogeos hoy a quién sirváis; pero yo y mi casa serviremos a Jehová”.

Josué 24: 15

Tres puntos clave en la decisión de Josué:

1. Yo: El tomó el liderazgo, la iniciativa

2. Mi casa: Involucró a la familia

3. Serviremos: El y su casa sirviendo al Señor único y soberano.

Una iglesia que está estructurada por un sistema celular deberá evaluar que tan involucrados están los cabezas de cada hogar y que tanto están involucrado a sus familias.

Cuando una célula apunta no solo alcanzar individuos, sino familias enteras lograrán poner bases sólidas en el crecimiento cualitativo de la iglesia en general. Si bien es cierto, todos ó por lo menos la gran mayora anhela que la iglesia crezca, esta aspiración se cumplirá integralmente cuando lideres toman decisiones y modelan con el ejemplo mostrando a la familia en el servicio al Señor.

Los modelos son importantes, el liderazgo debe tomar iniciativas y decidir tal como vemos en el ejemplo de Josué, involucrándose él y toda su familia en el servicio a Jehová.
