One of the most “reproductive” leaders at our church is Laura. I’ve lost count of how many times her group has multiplied. So I asked her to lead a training session for other leaders on how to multiply a group. Her response is a clue to the secret of multiplication: “I have no idea what to teach others about multiplication,” she told me. “It just keeps happening. I don’t even know how!”

A healthy apple sapling grows, becomes a strong tree, and produces fruit. Some of that fruit falls to the ground where its seeds can embed themselves to produce new apple seedlings. The same holds true for people: A healthy child grows, matures to adulthood, and starts his or her own family. A healthy cell—any kind of cell—naturally grows and reproduces itself. It’s not difficult to see that healthy things grow and reproduce themselves. It’s the natural order of the way God created his world to operate: Be fruitful and increase in number . . . multiply.

Laura’s group is healthy, so growth and multiplication occur naturally.

God designed his church to reproduce. Since cell groups are the church, each one is designed to reproduce as well. The power to reproduce is already built into the cell. We don’t need to design some human system or impose some outside multiplication strategy. It is already part of the cell’s DNA. We just need to learn how to tap into that power to reproduce.

This should be as natural as human, animal, or vegetation reproduction, but that’s too easy and simple for many people and organizations! So some churches and groups add programs and systems and, eventually, they spend so much time running the programs that they are no longer reproducing anymore. That’s what happened to the Pharisees of Jesus’ day, and it happens in so many churches today. E.M. Bounds said it succinctly: “Men are looking for better methods, God is looking for better men.”

Do you want your group(s) to continually grow and multiply as a part of your long-term cell strategy? The secret is not a program or system, although I do believe there is a biblical process involved. That process involves cultivating the health of your group(s) in seven areas. Here are some diagnosis questions to get you started:

1. Is the cell Christ-centered?

2. Does the cell have a healthy, growing leader?

3. Is the leader sharing leadership with a team? (See last week’s post.)

4. Is the cell proactive? Does it have goals and plans?

5. Is the cell living in authentic community?

6. Is the cell ministering to others?

7. Is the cell a discipling environment?

I’ve provided a free online health assessment that includes 42 questions to help you better evaluate the health of your cell(s) in these seven areas. The assessment takes approximately ten minutes for a leader to complete, and a link to the results will be emailed to the leader, who can then forward those results to a coach or church leader(s). That web link will have a graphical view of your results and links to helpful resources online.

Multiplication. It’s the sweet fruit of a healthy cell. It also contains the seeds for ongoing cell ministry. Focus on health. Multiplication will result.

El secreto de la multiplicación celular

Uno de los lderes mas “reproductivos” en nuestra iglesia es Laura. He perdido la cuenta de las veces que su grupo se ha multiplicado. As que le ped que dirigiera una sesión de entrenamiento para otros  lderes en cómo multiplicar un grupo. Su respuesta es un clave al secreto de la multiplicación: “No tengo idea qué enseñar a otros acerca de la multiplicación”, me dijo. “Simplemente sigue sucediendo. ¡Ni siquiera sé cómo! ”

Un árbol de manzanas sanas crece, se convierte en un árbol fuerte y produce fruto. Parte de esa fruta cae al suelo y sus semillas pueden incrustarse para producir nuevas plantas de manzana. Lo mismo es cierto para las personas: Un niño sano crece, madura a la edad adulta, y comienza su propia familia. Una célula sana de cualquier tipo crece naturalmente y se reproduce. No es difcil ver que las cosas sanas crecen y se reproducen. Es el orden natural de la manera en que Dios creó el mundo para operar: Sed fructferos y multiplicaos. . . multiplicar.

El grupo de Laura es saludable, por lo que el crecimiento y la multiplicación es de forma natural.

Dios diseñó su iglesia para reproducirse. Dado que los grupos celulares son la iglesia, cada uno está diseñado para reproducirse  también. El poder de reproducirse ya está integrado en la célula. Nosotros no tenemos que diseñar ningún sistema humano o imponer alguna estrategia de reproducción. Ya es parte del ADN de la célula. Sólo tenemos que aprender a aprovechar el poder de reproducirse.

Esto debera ser tan natural como la reproducción humana, animal o vegetal, pero eso es demasiado fácil y sencillo para muchas personas y organizaciones. As que algunas iglesias y grupos añaden programas y sistemas, y con el tiempo, pasan mucho tiempo en marcha con programas que ya no ayudan a la reproducción. Eso es lo que le pasó con los fariseos en el tiempo de Jesús, y lo que ocurre en muchas iglesias hoy en da. EM Bounds dijo de manera sucinta: “Los hombres están buscando mejores métodos, Dios busca mejores hombres.”

¿Quieres que tu grupo (s) crezca continuamente y se multipliquen como parte de su estrategia celular a largo plazo? El secreto no es un programa o sistema, aunque yo creo que hay un proceso bblico envuelto. Ese proceso consiste en el cultivo de la salud de su grupo (s) en siete áreas. Aqu tiene algunas preguntas para ayudarle a empezar:

1. ¿Está la célula centrada en Cristo?

2. ¿Tiene la célula un ambiente sano, y un lder en crecimiento?

3. ¿Comparte el lder el liderazgo con su equipo? (Ver el post de la semana pasada.)

4. ¿Es la célula activa? ¿Tiene metas y planes?

5. ¿Vive la célula en una comunidad auténtica?

6. ¿Está la célula ministrando a los demás?

7. ¿Tiene la célula un ambiente de discipulado?

He proporcionado una evaluación de salud gratis (online) que incluye 42 preguntas que le ayudarán a evaluar mejor la salud de su célula (s) en estas siete áreas. La evaluación toma aproximadamente diez minutos para que un lder la complete, y un enlace de los resultados será enviado al lder, que también puede enviar los resultados a un entrenador o lder de la iglesia (s). Healthy cell multiplication begins with—you guessed it—a healthy cell! Years ago I used to do lots of vision casting, goal setting, and arm twisting to get our groups to multiply. I’d share Scriptures with leaders that clearly articulated the need to reproduce. I prodded, rewarded, celebrated, shamed, urged, and manipulated … but none of these tactics ever produced great results. Then I started focusing on the health of our groups. We developed what we called the seven vital signs of a healthy group, which later became the seven chapters of my book Small Group Vital Signs, published by TOUCH (www.touchusa.org).

I stopped talking about multiplication because our healthy groups naturally multiplied, and they multiplied in healthy ways. (Do you really want an unhealthy group to reproduce itself?) It’s natural for healthy cells to reproduce themselves.

When we assessed all our groups, we came to this surprising revelation: Sharing Leadership with a Core Team was by far the biggest catalyst for groups to grow and multiply.

Before he selected the 12 apostles, Jesus called two sets of brothers. Three of those four, Peter, James, and John, became Jesus’ core team. Jesus poured his life into these three men, investing into them and modeling a life surrendered to the Father. While Jesus did not ignore the other nine apostles, he concentrated his time on these three.

Jesus knew something vital that we may overlook: No one can effectively lead, disciple, or shepherd more than about three people. Even Jesus didn’t attempt it. Healthy leaders who lead healthy, growing cells also share leadership with two to three others.

How do you go about building your team? I share seven steps to sharing leadership in my blog post here. The seven steps are basic:

1. Share the leadership load with 2-3 others.

2. Don’t go back to how you used to lead.

3. Create a clear plan for action.

4. Share the leadership roles of shepherding and discipling people.

5. Actively develop core team members.

6. Attend training sessions together.

7. Extend the Kingdom.

In my opinion, the title of my book, The Pocket Guide to Burnout-Free Small Group Leadership (TOUCH) tells only half the story. It’s certainly true that by sharing leadership you will avoid leadership burnout. Even more importantly, when you build a team you will be much more effective and productive. It takes a team to reproduce!

Construyendo el equipo

La multiplicación celular saludable comienza con-lo pensaste-¡con una célula sana! Hace años yo sola hacer muchas visiones, establecer metas, y un apretón de brazo para que nuestros grupos se multipliquen. Me gustara compartir con los lderes Escrituras que articulan claramente la necesidad de reproducirse. Pellizqué, recompensé, celebré, avergoncé, insté y manipulé… pero ninguna de estas tácticas jamás produjo grandes resultados. Entonces empecé a centrarme en la salud de nuestros grupos. Hemos desarrollado lo que llamamos los siete signos vitales de un grupo sano, que más tarde se convirtió en los siete captulos de mi libro Signos vitales en los Grupos Pequeños, publicados por touch (www.touchusa.org).

Dejé de hablar de la multiplicación porque nuestros grupos sanos se multiplicaron naturalmente, y se multiplicaron de manera saludable. (¿De verdad quieres un grupo no saludable que se reproduzca?) Es natural que las células sanas se reproduzcan.

Cuando evaluamos todos nuestros grupos, llegamos a esta sorprendente revelación: compartir el liderazgo con un equipo central fue de lejos el mayor catalizador para que los grupos crezcan y se multipliquen.

Antes de que Él seleccionara a los 12 apóstoles, Jesús llamó a dos parejas de hermanos. Tres de los cuatro, Pedro, Santiago y Juan, se convirtieron en equipo central de Jesús. Jesús derramó su vida en estos tres hombres, invirtiendo en ellos y modelando una vida entregada al Padre. Mientras que Jesús no ignoro a los otros nueve apóstoles, concentró su tiempo en estos tres.

Jesús saba algo vital que podemos pasar por alto: Nadie puede dirigir efectivamente, discpulo o pastor más de aproximadamente tres personas. Ni siquiera Jesús lo intento. Lderes sanos que dirigen, células que crecen sanas también comparten liderazgo con otros dos o tres.

¿Cómo haces para construir tu equipo? Comparto siete pasos para compartir el liderazgo en mi blog aqu. Los siete pasos son básicos:

1. Comparte la carga del liderazgo con otros 2-3.

2. No regrese a la manera que sola liderar.

3. Crea un plan de acción claro.

4. Comparte las funciones de liderazgo de pastoreo y discipula a la gente.

5. Desarrolla activamente miembros para el equipo central.

6. Asiste a las sesiones de entrenamiento juntos.

7. Extiende el Reino.

En mi opinión, el ttulo de mi libro, La Gua de Bolsillo para estar libre de agotamiento en el Liderazgo de Grupo Pequeño (TOUCH) dice solo la mitad de la historia. Es cierto que al compartir el liderazgo se evitará el agotamiento del liderazgo. Aún más importante, cuando se construye un equipo usted va a ser mucho más eficaz y productivo. ¡Se necesita un equipo para reproducir!
