Get Infected

Should we assume or conclude that as civilization passes through time that it actually advances in quality automatically? I think this is a bad assumption. In fact, I see civilization being brutalized by technology and the extremely fast pace of living, underwritten by access to electronic relationships. Facebook is a social network phenomena that while providing a connection to others we may care about, it does not allow me to be at the bedside in a hospital to “touch” my friends and family when they may need me most. This electronic connection even provides my mind and heart with an excuse for not going to the bedside, even if the friend is only a few miles away from my computer at the time!

Let us be honest, we hide from sincere, caring, touching relationships by using the sterile electronic environment. We can touch more people, and faster, but there is little chance that we will be infected with the germ of true connection. If that were to happen, I might have to alter my schedule to be “with” someone for an extended period of time and incubate relationship!! (Sarcasm! Forgive me?)

Certainly the utilization of electronics and media have assisted us in reaching a larger audience with the gospel, but the continuance of discipleship needs the oikos environment to bring lasting, daily growth and the maturity that God has designed for us and others. Concert-to-concert, large meeting-to-large meeting, seminar-to-seminar yields a pseudo-life bearing resemblance to a rock skipping across the water! No foundation to hold it up when the momentum discontinues!

  • Love this topic. Through intentional but relational contact IN OUR STREET some examples of what we have experienced:
built great relatonships with Muslims in the community to the extent that they have leant us a car when we needed it, helped us with food for mission teams coming in and we sit and talk happily in each others homes etc without any compromise
Had 2 neighbours (unsaved) come on mission and ministry trips with us
Had 2 different unsaved families stay in our home for extended periods of time (up to 6 months) in a crises etc etc

Oikos evangelism has bought us great reationships, a ton of fun and massive opportunities that a chuch programme could never have offered

…. oh, and there are challenges but they just change us to be more like Jesus. We are all winners!
