Cell Groups and the Priesthood of Believers

When I came to reside in the city of New York, I was responding to God’s call to pastor the First Spanish Baptist Church of Manhattan. As I was starting to serve here, I encountered various challenges. When I looked at the 30 plus story buildings that stood in front of the temple, I wondered: “How do we penetrate those enormous towers?” Also considering the distance at which the members lived and the different work schedules that everyone had, I asked myself, “How do I serve my brothers and sisters in these different circumstances?”

God gave me the response to my concerns via the implementation of the cell groups. The members have been able to witness to their neighbors in the large buildings, as well as spiritually edify one another through cell group participation. This has been one of the greatest blessings we have received.

During the week, the participants are ministered in their homes or their neighborhood. New York is a large city, and our people live long distances from the temple, so it’s very difficult for them to “come to church” during the week. But if there is a cell group near their home, they can meet with other believers, pray, read the Scriptures and fellowship with one another.

In addition, through cell groups, the believers become aware of needs that could easily go unnoticed in other situations. They can minister to each other. For example, recently, one of our cell group hosts, needed to go to a medical appointment but did not have a ride. The cell group leader, learning of her situation, was able to take her, wait for her, then take her back home. This is just one example but there are many more. Often couples with marital problems are helped through the counsel of another couple who learned about the need in a cell group. New believers are guided through the help of seasoned believers.

Now the task of spiritual care of the church is not in the hands of one man, but a collaborative approach that facilitates the mission. After all, isn’t this the New Testament model?

The Bible states in Ephesians 4:15-16:” But, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head-Christ- From whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.” In cell group based churches, this is possible.

Las Células y El Sacerdocio de los Ceyentes.

Cuando llegué de mi pas a residir a la ciudad de New York, respondiendo el llamado de Dios para pastorear la congregación de la Primera iglesia Bautista Hispana de Manhattan, me encontré con varios desafos importantes.

Al mirar los imponentes edificios de más de treinta pisos que estaban situados frente al templo me preguntaba ¿Cómo podemos penetrar en esas enormes torres? Al considerar las distancias a las que la gente viva y los distintos horarios en los que trabajan yo me haca la pregunta: ¿de qué manera podré atender pastoralmente a estos hermanos en esta situación?

La respuesta a estas inquietudes Dios me la dio a través de la implementación del sistema celular. A través de la participación en las células, los hermanos no solo pudieron entrar con el evangelio en los edificios sino que además empezaron a ser atendidos espiritualmente unos con otros. Ésta ha sido una de las grandes bendiciones que hemos recibido.

Durante la semana nuestra gente es ministrada all en el lugar donde viven. New York es una ciudad grande. Por las distancias a donde viven con respecto al templo, y por la diversidad de horarios, muchos de ellos no pueden llegar al templo entre semana, pero si hay una célula a poca distancia de donde viven, pueden reunirse con sus hermanos, orar, leer la Biblia y compartir unos con otros.

A la vez, a través de las células los creyentes se hacen conscientes de necesidades que de otra manera pasaran desapercibidas y as pueden atenderlas.

Por ejemplo, en estos das una de nuestras anfitrionas de célula necesitaba ir a una cita médica y no tenia cómo llegar. La Dirigente de su célula, se ocupó de llevarla y esperar hasta que fuera atendida. Podramos citar otros ejemplos. Hemos visto cómo matrimonios con problemas son atendidos a través del consejo de otros hermanos; nuevos conversos son orientados mediante la ayuda de creyentes más experimentados.

Ahora la tarea de la atención espiritual de la iglesia no está en manos de un solo hombre sino que es una labor compartida por muchos, facilitando as la tarea ¿no es acaso éste el modelo del Nuevo Testamento? Por supuesto que s.

La Biblia dice en Efesios 4:15-16 “sino que siguiendo la verdad en amor, crezcamos en todo en aquel que es la cabeza, esto es Cristo, de quien todo el cuerpo, bien concertado y unido entre s por todas las coyunturas que se ayudan mutuamente, según la actividad propia de cada miembro, recibe su crecimiento para ir edificándose en amor” .En la iglesia basada en células esto es posible.
