If you have cells where all generations are pro-actively welcome, then preparation needs to bear in mind all ages. Sadly I see intergenerational cells interpreted as “a focus on the children’ then “a focus on the adults.†This, in my opinion, misses the point of us being together. Our focus is Jesus! There is no Biblical evidence that we need to be in peer groups to worship, hear from God or learn together – there is nothing wrong with peer groups – but when they are the comfort zone for us all I think we have lost our way according to the Biblical model.
Hopefully the following will help prepare to fully engage every generation:
Use creativity – God is a creative God and we are here to reflect Him (e.g. bring flowers and appreciate their beauty, all ages write a love letter to Jesus and read it during worship, make a banner adding to it the names of Jesus each week and focus on that during worship).
Be interactive (e.g. praying in pairs, all ages giving testimony, asking different age groups to read a Scripture, have prayer needs from every generation).
Use application questions (e.g. what line of that song meant the most to you, and why? What have you struggled with most this week? Application questions are ageless).
Never focus on “children’s songs” – unless you would sing them even if children were not present. Choose songs that focus on Jesus and do not have endless words (this is good for newcomers too) and are easily remembered. Children need to sing songs that are “beyond them†In old age they will be singing the songs of their childhood!
Mobilize every generation (e.g. to help with the welcome , introduce the ice breaker, call someone who is sick, make cards for birthdays, prepare the room).
Kids Slot – where the children / adults go to another room for the Word and sometimes the Witness. Give as much preparation as the adults receive (maybe more) and always be sure that the coach visits it periodically when he/ she comes to the group. The coach may need to model the Kids Slot in the center of the cell a few times to ensure every member knows how to run it effectively.
Never use art and craft because this teaches little, if anything about Jesus. Here’s an example of what you might use: give each child 2 pieces of paper. Ask them to write the name of someone they like on one and someone they don’t like very much on the other. Then write how many out of 10 they love each person (it will probably be less for the person they don’t like). Then give them another color to write how many out of 10 Jesus loves each of them!!! (I would like to see adults being honest enough to do this too!!!) Teaching point: Jesus love is always unconditional and always the same.
Above all – remember we are there to lead every generation to the throne of God, to have an encounter with Him and weep and laugh together. Why do we need to be separated to do this – providing we prepare well. Comments?

Esperemos que los siguientes concejos le ayuden a prepararse para participar plenamente con todas las generaciones:
