Nearly thirteen years ago, Cypress Creek Church constructed a building with the help of some well-known architects. In the design stage, the architects asked us about the function of the building. “What’s going to happen there?”they quipped. They believed the form of the building needed to follow the function of the building.
The same is true for church life. The form or structure is determined by the function. You must first ask yourself, “What are you trying to accomplish?” Is your goal to win and disciple souls? If so, then your structure cannot be about power, authority figures, a specific personality or possessiveness. Instead, it must be about teamwork. When you create a structure based on teams, you have viability which leads to multiplication and reproduction. Teamwork produces the appropriate environment for birth and growth. All living beings exist within a structure. Without the physical body a human being has no life. Therefore, structure and life are not opposites but they complement each other.
A cell group has an opportunity to be a team. As a team, they support each other in life. Likewise, the leaders of several cell groups form a team purposing to equip the people in their cells in a powerful and effective manner. To work together as a team you have to share the same vision.
A beautiful illustration of this is music. To create a vocal ensemble you can’t just put a bunch of soloists together. The sound each member makes has to mesh with the sound the next person makes. It’s not about showcasing one person’s ability; it’s about creating one, complete sound.
Team structure allows you to handle tasks efficiently because teams already know the gifting of their individual team members. The unexpected is even easily dealt with because you don’t have to pull together a committee. You already have a team in place. Teams keep the focus on the vision and a balance between order and change. They allow the whole system to be flexible and reproducible.

Hace casi trece años, la iglesia Cypress Creek construyó un edificio con la ayuda de algunos arquitectos reconocidos. Cuando se crea una estructura basada en equipos, tiene viabilidad que conduce a la multiplicación y reproducción. El trabajo en equipo produce un entorno apropiado para el nacimiento y crecimiento. Un grupo celular tiene la oportunidad de ser un equipo. Como equipo, se apoyan mutuamente en la vida. Del mismo modo, los lderes de varios grupos de células forman un equipo propositivo para equipar a la gente en sus células de una manera poderosa y efectiva. Para trabajar juntos como un equipo tienes que compartir la misma visión.
Una hermosa ilustración de esto es la música. Para crear un conjunto vocal no puedes sólo poner un montón de solistas juntos. El sonido que cada miembro hace tiene que engranar con el sonido que la siguiente persona hace. No se trata de exhibir la capacidad de una persona; se trata de crear un sonido completo.
