Healthy groups which build strong disciples base their lesson on the Bible. I like to tell new people that they do not need to know anything about the Bible to come to the meeting, but that we will open the Bible at every meeting of the group.

Why? Simply because the Bible nourishes us as disciples.

If we make another author’s book the centerpiece of the group, it subtly communicates that the Bible is not as relevant to our needs. If we gather people to discuss an author’s book on marriage, manhood, purpose, or something else, we do not train them to look first to the Word of God.  In order to make a disciple, we need to equip them to open the Bible, read it, and hear from God. And the cell is a great training ground for this!

Many new people come to a group saying (or thinking), “I don’t know anything about the Bible.” Well, the only way to learn is through exposure to it, and having them turn in their Bibles to read the Word helps break that barrier of unfamiliarity.

Jesus said we don’t live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
So, since the Bible is the spiritual food, that makes other books “pre-digested” food! That is, they are someone else’s processing of the word which they then give to us. Predigested food won’t build mature believers. Let’s give them the real thing!

Verdadera Comida

Los grupos saludables que construyen fuertes discpulos basan la lección sobre la Biblia. Me gustara decirle a la gente nueva que no necesita saber nada acerca de la Biblia para llegar a la reunión, pero que vamos a abrir la Biblia en todas las reuniones del grupo.

¿Por qué? Simplemente porque la Biblia nos nutre como discpulos.

Si hacemos otro libro de autor la pieza central del grupo, que sutilmente se comunica que la Biblia no es tan relevante para nuestras necesidades. Si nos reunimos para discutir los libros de un autor sobre el matrimonio, la virilidad, el propósito, o algo más, no los entrenas a primera mirada a la Palabra de Dios. Con el fin de hacer un discpulo, ¡es necesario abrir la Biblia, leer, y escuchar a Dios, la célula es un campo de entrenamiento ideal para esto!

Muchas nuevas personas llegan a un grupo diciendo (o pensando): “Yo no sé nada acerca de la Biblia.” Bueno, la única manera de aprender es a través de la exposición a ella, y ayuda a que ellos a su vez en la Biblia puedan leer la Palabra y romper esa barrera de desconocimiento.

Jesús dijo que no sólo de pan vive el hombre sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios. Por lo tanto, ya que la Biblia es el alimento espiritual, que hace otros libros alimento “pre-digerido” Es decir, ellos son alguien más en el procesamiento de la palabra que se nos da. El alimento predigerido no va a construir creyentes maduros. ¡Vamos a darles la verdadera comida!

In 1833, while working on his theory of evolution, Darwin visited an island where he found cannibals and believed there was no solution for them. But after 34 years, Darwin went back to that area and surprisingly saw them completely changed. How? A missionary named John Peiton had shared the gospel and the whole island had turned to Christ. They had started attending church and allowed God’s Word to transform them. This miracle was brought about by the unique power that dwells in the Word of God that is able to transform people.

In Romans 1:16 Paul said “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (NIV). Why did Paul say, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel?” Most likely because some were prejudiced to preaching God’s Word and decided to use “other means.” Paul confirms this in 1 Corinthians 2:4 when he said: “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words” (NIV). All this to say: the Word of God, the Bible, is the only thing that can produce true fellowship, transformation, evangelism and the multiplication of new disciples.

The secularization of society has become a serious problem in Western “religious” countries, where everything that sounds biblical or religious causes rejection. Some cell groups, feeling this pressure and sense of rejection, don’t connect people initially with the word of God. This is a huge mistake, because it is God’s Word alone that can penetrate lives (Hebrews 4:12). The rest is superficial and volatile (1 Peter 1:23).

While there are many ways to attract people to a cell, we need to remember that what attracts people will also sustain them. The challenge for today’s pastors and leaders, given the prevailing secularism, is to strategically bring the word of God to people’s hearts. And the cell groups must become central in this endeavor. They must not follow the wide and easy path of the world, which is completely inadequate (Daniel 5:27).

In its early stages, Protestantism in Spain (my country) spread among the nobility and educated people due to their reading of the Bible. After persecution brought about by the Inquisition, it spread through secret cells. So in reality, the Spanish Church was born through cells. Often those believers had to rely on memorized ” articles of faith” based on the Bible because of the scarcity of Bibles. Yet, even portions of God’s Word sustained them.

God’s Word must remain central in the cell group and not be replaced by any social event, prayer meeting, training time, or anything else (1 Peter 1:23).

La lección celular

En 1833, Darwin investigando acerca de la teora de la evolución, llegó a una isla donde vio que aquella gente eran canbales. Afirmó que esa gente no tena solución. Pero después de 34 años volvió a ese lugar y vio que aquella gente estaba completamente cambiada, porque un misionero llamado John Peiton haba llegado hasta all para hablarles del evangelio y toda la isla se convirtió y todos acudan a la iglesia y estudiaban la palabra de Dios. Este milagro se produjo por el poder único que reside en la palabra de Dios que es capaz de hacer cosas imposibles para el hombre.

Pablo dijo en Romanos 1:16 “Porque no me avergüenzo del evangelio, porque es poder de Dios para salvación”. ¿Por qué dijo Pablo “no me avergüenzo del Evangelio”? Probablemente porque existan quienes tenan algún tipo de prejuicio a la hora de predicar la palabra de Dios abiertamente, y por eso usaban otros medios, cosa que Pablo confirma en 1Corintios 2:4 cuando dijo: “y ni mi palabra ni mi predicación fue con palabras persuasivas de humana sabidura”. Dicho de otra manera, la Palabra de Dios, la Biblia, es lo único que puede hacer que en las células se pueda tener verdadera comunión, transformación, evangelismo o multiplicación creando nuevos discpulos.

La secularización de los pueblos es un problema grave en los pases culturalmente cristianos, donde todo lo que suene a Biblia o religión es motivo de rechazo. Y es por eso que algunos grupos celulares no conectan a la gente inicialmente con la palabra de Dios, y eso es un tremendo error, porque es la palabra de Dios la única que puede penetrar las vidas (Hebreos 4:12), todo lo de más es superficial y volátil (1Pedro 1:23). Y aunque hay muchas formas de atraer a la gente a una célula, debemos saber que “lo que les hemos dado para atraerles es lo que tendremos que seguir dándoles para conservarles”. El desafo de los pastores y lderes de hoy, ante la secularización reinante, es el de poder llevarles estratégicamente la palabra de Dios sus corazones. Y los grupos celulares deben convertirse en expertos en este desafo y no irse por un camino ancho y fácil que cuando somos pesados en balanza somos hallados faltos (Dan. 5:27).

En sus inicios, el protestantismo en mi pas, España, se extendió entre la clase noble y culta debido a su relación con la lectura de la Biblia. Y tras la persecución de la Inquisición, no nos quedó otra que reunirnos en células clandestinas. As que la Iglesia Española nació a través de células. Y la única Biblia que tenamos eran los “autos de fe”. Los autos de fe eran los motivos por los que se condenaba a muerte a nuestros hermanos, que en su mayora eran versculos bblicos, que nuestros hermanos declaraban en los juicios. La lectura de la Biblia estaba prohibida, pero leer los autos de fe no, por lo que fueron los autos de fe la única palabra de Dios que pudimos tener los españoles en nuestras células clandestinas y gracias a esos autos de fe la iglesia pudo tener verdadera comunión, transformación, evangelismo o multiplicación. El historiador español Gabino Fernández Campos dice: “Los autos de fe de los tribunales de la Inquisición en España e Italia nos dan cuenta de 3.499 procesos contra “luteranos” que suponen el 7,1 por ciento de los procesos conocidos .

La palabra debe permanecer para siempre en cada grupo celular y no ser sustituida nunca por ningún evento social, reunión de oración o tiempos de entrenamiento, por muy efectivos que nos parezcan. (1Pedro 1:23).

Underwriting unity of THE faith and providing protection from the errors of false doctrine, is the process of allowing the word of Christ to dwell in us richly.  We are all ONE in Christ and therefore we eat of the same spiritual food, HIS word.  Peter says we start with milk (1 Peter 2:2) and the writer of Hebrews exhorts to move on to solid food (Hebrews 5:12-14).  Each member of the Body of Christ needs to obtain life from His word, regardless of age, gender, nationality, or station in life.

Cell groups must keep Christ and His word at the center in order for this instructive and protective process to grow and guard us as we progress from infancy to maturity.  Centering a cell meeting around something other than HIS truth is to be avoided.  Our times together are limited and our aim should be to strengthen and equip the saints for their work by edifying them with God’s unfailing word!  Even if the cell is celebrating a birthday, having a cookout or a recreational meeting, God’s word can be visited and applied appropriately, providing relevant meaning to everyday life for the believers.

La unidad de la fe y la garanta de protección a los errores de la falsa doctrina, es el proceso de permitir que la palabra de Cristo habite en nosotros en abundancia. Todos somos uno en Cristo y por lo tanto comemos de un mismo alimento espiritual, su palabra. Pedro dice que comenzará con leche (1 Pedro 2:2) y el escritor de Hebreos exhorta a pasar a la comida sólida (Hebreos 5:12-14). Cada miembro del Cuerpo de Cristo necesita obtener la vida de su palabra, independientemente de su edad, sexo, nacionalidad o posición social.

Los grupos celulares deben mantener a Cristo y su palabra en el centro, para que este proceso instructivo y de protección crezca y nos proteja a medida que avanzamos desde la infancia hasta la madurez. Last week I talked with two pastors who questioned me about the cell lesson. One asked, “What topics should I cover?” The other said, “How do I prepare a cell lesson?”

Their questions jogged my thinking about the central place of the cell lesson and the need to review it constantly.

For starters, a great cell lesson is based on God’s inerrant Word. The reason for this is because the cell group is not primarily a social gathering or fellowship time but a spiritual event centered on God’s Word.

Does this mean the cell leader needs to create the lesson each week? Finding a new topic and preparing a brand new theme can be time-intensive and intimidating for most leaders. That’s why I recommend following the pastor’s teaching each week (normally the Sunday morning sermon). Here’s why:

• It connects small group with large group. This practice serves as a constant reminder that the cell isn’t an independent entity doing its own thing.
• It applies the expository/teaching message to real 24/7 life. The best churches humbly realize that even excellent sermons are inadequate to transform the hearers.
• All of the largest cell churches around the world do it.
• It provides a never ending supply of material. When the lesson is based on the pastor’s teaching, there should be a steady stream of new material–as long as the pastor doesn’t repeat the same sermons each week!
• It relieves pressure from the small group leader. It helps alleviate the leader’s workload and allows him or her to concentrate on other cell functions.

Of course there are exceptions to the sermon rule. For example, if the leader desires to cover another topic, I believe we need to give him or her liberty, as long as the supervisor knows in advance. Also, some church plants don’t have Sunday celebration services, and in such cases, the church planter will need to prepare the themes separately.

In November, we will be discussing topics such as: God’s Word and the cell lesson, how to develop an interactive cell lesson, questions to use, and the balance between evangelism and edification. • Week 1 (November 6-12) -Why it’s important to base the cell lesson on the Bible.
• Week 2 (November 13-19): Insights on how to develop a great lesson. There are resources to help in the lesson-making process such as the Serendipity Bible, Lesson Maker, etc.
• Week 3 (November 20-26): Great lessons are based on great questions, which focus on observation and application. Transformation is the goal. My general rule is to include an application question for every two observation questions. Cell members need to remember that the cell is about transformation from the Word of God and not merely more information.
• Week 4 (November 27-December 03): Great lessons have a discipleship/edification component and an evangelism theme. Edify the saints and minister to unbelievers. This is a hard balance but a necessary one.

La semana pasada hablé con dos pastores que me preguntaron acerca de la lección para la célula. Uno de ellos preguntó: “¿Qué temas debera cubrir?” El otro dijo: “¿Cómo preparo una lección para la célula?”    Sus preguntas corrieron en mi forma de pensar sobre el lugar central de la lección de la célula y la necesidad de revisar constantemente.

Para empezar, una lección de células buena se basa en la infalible Palabra de Dios. La razón principal de esto es porque el grupo celular no es una reunión social o un tiempo de compañerismo, sino un acontecimiento espiritual centrado en la Palabra de Dios.

¿Significa esto que el lder de la célula necesita crear la lección cada semana? Encontrar un nuevo tema y preparar un tema completamente nuevo puede tomar mucho tiempo y es intimidante para la mayora de los lderes. Es por eso que recomendamos seguir la enseñanza del pastor de la semana (normalmente el sermón de la mañana del domingo). He aqu por qué:

• Conecta los pequeños grupos con el grupo grande. Esta práctica sirve como un recordatorio constante de que la célula no es una entidad independiente haciendo lo suyo.
• Se aplica el mensaje expositivo / enseñanza con la vida real 24 / 7. Las mejores iglesias humildemente dan cuenta de que incluso los excelentes sermones no son suficientes para transformar a los oyentes.
• Todas las iglesias celulares grandes en todo el mundo, lo hacen.
• Proporciona una fuente inagotable de material. Cuando la lección se basa en la enseñanza del pastor, no debe haber un flujo constante de material nuevo–siempre y cuando el pastor no repeta los mismos sermones cada semana!
• Alivia la presión del lder del grupo. Ayuda a aliviar la carga de trabajo del lder y permite que él o ella pueda concentrarse en las funciones celulares.

Por supuesto que hay excepciones en la regla del sermón. Por ejemplo, si el lder desea cubrir otro tema, creo que tenemos que darle a él, la libertad, siempre y cuando el supervisor sepa de antemano. Además, algunas plantas de la iglesia no cuentan con servicios de celebración dominical, y en tales casos, el plantador de la iglesia tendrá que preparar los temas por separado.

En noviembre, vamos a cubrir temas tales como: la Palabra de Dios y la lección celular, cómo desarrollar una lección interactiva de células, las preguntas a usar, y el equilibrio entre el evangelismo y la edificación. Experimentados pastores de la iglesia celular van a escribir 25 blogs sobre este tema durante todo el mes de noviembre. Vamos a cubrir:

• Semana 1 (06 al 12 11): ¿Por qué es importante la base de la lección para la célula en la Biblia?
• Semana 2 (noviembre 13-19): Reflexiones sobre cómo desarrollar una gran lección. Hay recursos para ayudar en el proceso de enseñanza de decisiones, como la Biblia de Serendipity y el fabricante de la lección, etc.

The social sciences have contributed important elements in the understanding of Scriptures. We now know that a fundamental aspect of social relations among the early Christians was the concept of honor and shame. Honor was considered by Mediterranean societies as a virtue to be sought by all means.

Hospitality was a very important element in the acquisition and preservation of honor. It was considered a great shame not to show hospitality to the people. In fact, hospitality increased one’s honor. The greater attention showed toward the guests, or the greater the number of guests received, the greater the honor conferred.

That was the reason why hospitality became a virtue highly appreciated by the early Christians, and that is the reason why multiple mentions of the topic are made in the New Testament.

Although today, the relationship between honor and shame are not as rigid as in ancient times, it still remains true that hospitality is considered a sign of courtesy. New Testament history should encourage cell hosts, for example, to continue serving others. Obviously, this is not the only type of venue to show hospitality, but it is an important one.

Honor y vergüenza en el siglo primero.

Las ciencias sociales han aportado importantes elementos en la comprensión de las Escrituras. Ahora se sabe que un aspecto fundamental de las relaciones sociales entre los primeros cristianos era los conceptos de honor y vergüenza. Las sociedades mediterráneas consideraban el honor como una virtud que se deba procurar por todos los medios.

Un elemento muy importante en la adquisición y conservación del honor era la hospitalidad. Se consideraba una gran vergüenza el no mostrarse hospitalario con las personas. Por el contrario, el ser hospedador contribua a incrementar el honor de la persona. Mientras mayores fueran las atenciones al huésped o mayor el número de huéspedes que se reciban, mayor honor atribuido.

Por ese motivo fue que la hospitalidad se convirtió en una virtud muy apreciada por los primeros cristianos y esa es la razón por la que se hacen múltiples menciones del tema en el Nuevo Testamento.

Aunque hoy en da las relaciones de honor y vergüenza no son tan rgidas como en la antigüedad, todava sigue siendo verdad que la hospitalidad se considera una muestra de cortesa. Una razón importante que debera animar a los cristianos a mostrar su hospitalidad como anfitriones de células. Que no es la única forma de hospitalidad, pero s una muy importante.
